about

When Mario and Cocó set up SILVANIA, back in 1990 in Valencia, their aim was to merge pop with sound innovation. Seizing upon their alltime idols (COCTEAU TWINS, Brian Eno, ZOMBIES and BYRDS) they manufactured a personal style in which the then overrated electric guitar turned out to be a generator of a flood of echoes and strange sounds, thanks to their technological manipulation combined with elaborated pop melodies. A result of this initial years were their debut record “Miel Nube Hiel” (1992), maxi-single that would anticipate their increasing interest for new pop structures, and “En Cielo De Océano” (1993), their first album for Elefant Records. Both of these works consolidate SILVANIA as the only band in Spain that’s able enough to solve successfully the union between ambient and pop in a strict sense. They gain critical aknowledgement and play gigs all over Spain, while they prepare their second LP, “Paisaje III’ (1994). Electronics get more and more space in their creative methods, producing as a result a wide registered record, in which you can find from sinuous melodies and delicate acoustic passages to clearly electronic and avant-garde languages. In February 1995 they record their single “Avalovara”, where guitars virtually disappear on behalf of an exhaustive studio experimentation. Later on they would participate in Benicàssim’s International Festival, with a set that was based exclusively on noise and sequencers. They are called then to play the techno nights of the Barcelona Acció Musical (BAM) festival, where they present a single 40 minute composition between the analog electronics and the most rhythmic isolationism. By the same time, they play the support act for STEREOLAB and MOONSHAKE in Madrid, and prepare their remixes album.

This release, called “Delay Tambor”, is without any doubt one of the more precise artefacts in the market to show the now and tomorrow of world’s musical avant-garde, aside from strengthen SILVANIA as rightful integrants of that restricted élite of sound risk scientifics.

“Delay Tambor” is a remixes record featuring some of the best and riskier acts in present day electronics in the service of SILVANIA: AUTECHRE, SEEFEEL, SCANNER, SCORN and LOCUST are the elect to remix songs from SILVANIA’s first two albums: “En Cielo De Océano” (1993) and “Paisaje III” (1994). Aside from the remixes, the record includes three previously unreleased tracks by the duo.

AUTECHRE: Higher representatives of Warp Records’ ‘Artificial Intelligence” sound, based on pure techno and rhythmic experimentation, they manufacture the highest quality and risk ambient in world’s panorama. Their last album, “Tri Reptae” (1994), has been Ellectronic Record of the year on The Wire and other specialized magazines. They’ve remixed SAINT ETIENNE.

AUTECHRE remix for “Delay Tambor” the song “Un Bosque En La Memoria”, taken from SILVANIA’s first album, “En Cielo De Océano”.

SEEFEEL: They began on Too Pure label, as the unreachable example of post-rock perfection, and evolved from dub to abstract technology, signing for Warp. Mark Clifford, their leader, explores under the name of DISJECTA even more extreme possibilities. They have produced and remixed COCTEAU TWINS (OTHERNESS) among others.

SEEFEEL remix for “Delay Tambor” the song “Trilce”, taken from SILVANIA’s first album, “En Cielo De Océano”.

SCANNER: He bases his work on the manipulation of short wave radio sounds, and manufactures complex music from that raw material, in a “serious”, though dangerous shape. Cult remixer, he’s worked with OVAL, SCORN, AUTECHRE, and recently Björk sampled him for some (illegal) composition, though they are working together in some of her new stuff.

SCANNER remix for “Delay Tambor” the song “Arcángel”, taken from SILVANIA’s first album, “En Cielo De Océano”.

SCORN: Mick Harris was a former member of NAPALM DEATH, the most extreme rock band that ever existed, and formed

SCORN to experience with atmospheres and dub, hip-hop, industrial sound and most extreme ambient. Master of isolationism, and one of the last boundaries in present day music.

SCORN remix for “Delay Tambor” the song “Raymi I”, taken from SILVANIA’s second album, “Paisaje III”.

LOCUST: Starting from the most hypnotic and repetitive techno, he’s arrived to broad territories that include winks to avant-garde jazz, atonal noise and most sedative and glider of ambient. With BIOSPHERE he’s the star of the Apollo label, ambient branch of the almighty RS (world’s most important techno record company aside from Warp).

LOCUST remix for “Delay Tambor” the song “Oval”, taken from SILVANIA’s first album, “En Cielo De Océano”.

“Galax Trax” is the ideal advance for “Delay Tambor”, using a neatly danceable language, going from house to progressive techno via isolationist dub-pop in “Ov: Locust mix”. Besides, you can find in this record two of the main characters in the new Spanish techno scene: VANGUARD from Barcelona and PROZACK from Galicia. The last exclusive theme in this vynil maxi-single is SILVANIA’s “Galax 5 am”, a minimalist experiment designed for the riskiest dancefloors.
